The Emacs window splits into two halves. One part still contains the C program, while the other piece displays the sequence of commands required to compile the program. It's not important at this point to understand exactly what these commands do. You need only know that this is how to compile a file displayed in a buffer. Emacs will tell you when compilation is complete.
