HTML references

HTML isn't hard to understand. First learn to read it, then start writing.

Every document on the Web is an HTML example. Use the View/Document Source menu item in Netscape to see the HTML source of the current document.

LaTex to HTML

The script for converting LaTeX documents to html is called latex2html.
It can be found in /usr/local/share/contrib/lib/latex2html/latex2html.
This will work for equations as well as text latex documents.

Commands

latex2html -h

latex2html <filename.tex>

The converted file will be called filename.html
This program works best if you use one of the suns like cadesmXX.eng, but may work on other architectures as well. They are the only ones that seems to have all of the software mounted. If you have problems and want to run the program again, remove the directory that latex2html created first.

The latex2html program includes its own manual page which can be viewed by typing nroff -man latex2html

There is also an web site which has more information about latex2html what it is, how it works, as well as information how to diagnose and fix problems and a listing of command line options.

A quick review on how to view a latex document:

latex filename.tex

dvi filename.dvi

dvips filename

Images

Capturing Images

To capture an image on the web:
If the image you want it on another html page, click on the right button over the image on the web page and save the image to the appropriate directory.
For capturing images on an SGI, use "snapshot" and then use xv to convert rgb to gif.
For popup menus, you will need two machines!
1. On "amachine", run xhost +anothermachine
2. Run application and popup the menu
3. On "anothermachine," run xwd -display amachine:0.0 -screen -name ApplicationName > /tmp/tmp.wd xwud -in /tmp/tmp.wd
4. Use xv to "grab" and "crop".
Otherwise, in general:
For other images, use xv's "grab" option and "crop" features. To grab an image, click on "grab" and then with the mouse in the window containing the image you want, double-click with the left mouse button. The whole window is now displayed by xv. Now use the left mouse button to click and drag a rectangle surrounding the area you want to crop and choose crop from the xv options.

How to make Transparent Gifs

To get a list of the gif's colors, on an SGI run
~bloss/bin/sgi/giftrans -L file.gif
On an SGI, run
~bloss/bin/sgi/giftrans -t '#ffffff' file.gif > newfile.gif
to make a transparent gif.

Convert RLE images to Tiffs

For 24-bit ray-traced rle images use
rleldmap -g 2.0 file.rle | applymap | rletotiff -o file.tiff
and then xv.

Convert RLE images Gifs

to8 -o <outputfile> <filename.rle>
rletogif -o <filename.gif> <outputfile>

Figures

For inline line-drawing type figures, transparent gif format works well. Make sure the application is not doing any filtering (xdvi does), you want just a black and white BITMAP.
Run whatever application generates the figure with black foreground and white background.
Use xv to grab the screen, crop it and save as a gif file.
Use xfig (on SGI's) (grab screen with xv)
Use a1ps and gv (grab screen with xv)
